2 niner niner 2's Blog

This is where I postulate, pontificate and ponder, mostly related to Joomla! The views and opinions are my own take on things and you can either agree with them or not. The late, great George Carlin and I saw eye-to-eye on so many levels. Enjoy!

Can't leave well enough alone

After having the previous template up for over a couple of months, numerous tweaks later, I decided that it was again time for a different look for this site. Something about the previous one just wasn't sitting right with me; couldn't put a finger on it, but I knew it had to be changed.

While cruising around the web a while back, I came across a site that was pretty much monochrome and I really liked the way it made the content jump off the page. Fired up Artisteer and a short time later, what you are seeing is the result.

I wonder how long this one will last?

Yet another new look

That's the problem with Artisteer; one cannot leave well-enough alone. For those of you who do not know what Artisteer is, it is, in my opinion, and as we would say back in Bugtussle (aka Lethbridge), Alberta, slicker than snot on a doorknob. Want to whip up a new look for your Joomla! web site? No probs. A few minutes in Artisteer and there ya' go. And one of the coolest things about it is that you can then take that new Joomla! template and export it as a WordPress theme, a Drupal theme, a DotNetNuke skin, and ASP.NET theme or even an HTML template. All with a single mouse click for each.

One quick note on the current look and what's with the header background

No, I do not live in or near Great Falls, Montana, USA; I live in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. I do, however, have a tremendous memory and experience from my flying career in this fine city. This is where, at the ripe old age of barely 19, I made my very first instrument approach to minimums in actual instrument meteorological conditions; pouring rain. Broke out just above Decision Height. I will have a detailed post on the matter on or about the 35th anniversary of this event in October, 2009. Tune in for all the gory details. In conclusion, what you see as the header background is a snippet of the Low Altitude En-route Chart for the area and the colours of the template are similar to those on this type of chart. Only fitting.

From Windows Live Writer - and why K2 is not here

ScribeFire LogoThis post is the reason that I am not yet using K2 from Joomlaworks.gr for this site; I need to be able to create and post entries using either Widows Live Writer or the ScribeFire plugin for Firefox. I much prefer to use these two editors as opposed to the 'back end' or 'front end' of the site using the native Joomla editor, third party editors or K2's existing methods. The main reason is that these two are rock-solid editors and function as expected; no 'gotchas'. Additionally, I am also able to fire them up in an instant without having to login to the site, front or back, which makes it extremely convenient for quick posts when an idea comes to mind.

K2 LogoK2 is a fantastic addition to Joomla I really do like all the other amazing things it can do, but unfortunately, the lack of support for the metaWeblog xml-rpc plugin to allow this post to be posted, I can't use it just yet.

windows-live-writer Follow this link to where you will find detailed, step-by-step instructions on how to set up Joomla! to use these two remote editors. There are also links there to download the two required Joomla! plugins. You can visit the sites where to download ScribeFire and Windows Live Writer by clicking the respective graphic.

Custom HTML

This is an instance of the Joomla! Custom HTML Module; one of my favourites. Easy enough to implement too.

Here is all that is required:

  • Extensions > Module Manager > New
  • Click on 'Custom HTML'
  • Set the parameters as required
  • Add your content; text, images, video ... you name it!
